Grow Your Blog!!

This is my first time doing anything like this and I want to thank Vicki for putting together this wonderful party. Welcome to the party!! There will be a giveaway at the end of the blog. You do not have to follow me in order to be entered in the giveaway.

My name is Judy and I have been quilting for about 20 years. Why do I blog. It is a way for me to stay connected to others who share the same passion I do for quilting. Also it lets my faraway friends keep tabs on me and what I am doing. When I first started this journey, I was under the impression that true quilters could machine piece but never machine quilt. Needless to say, I did not get much done in the early days.

But I have wised up and now I am happily machine quilting on my Bernina in my dining room. I do have most of my fabric in the basement, but enjoy being upstairs to sew. I live alone and work from home and have been known to set up my sewing machine next to my desk to sew in between calls.

My favorite kind of quilts are scrap quilts. I have been a fabric magnet for years. People seem to want to give me fabric. And I gladly accept it all. I am working thru the ugly fabric in my stash. I have decided that if I cut it up small enough, it won't be so ugly.

Here are a few examples of the kinds of quilts and things I do.

This is a quilt made entirely out of ribbons. A gal had it made for her daughter who showed horses when she a teenager.

This is my biggest quilt to date. It is Confederate flag quilt that was 120" square for my brother in law for Christmas several years back.

This is a triple shot. I made the quilt on the bed for my son and daughter in law, I made the baby blanket 30+ years ago for my son and this is my only granddaughter, Elly.

This is a barter quilt. I  bartered with my sister and she came and did yard work and I made this quilt for her to give to a co worker.

This is my beach houses quilt. The fabric screamed summer! I need to dig it out now that is 14 degrees and we are expecting more snow tonight.

This quilt was for a friend who just became a grandmother. The fabric was a sheet that matched the bedding for the baby's room and I added sashing and borders.

This is a Kid's Komfort quilt. This is a charity that our guild supports. My goal this year is to make 12 quilts one for each month. A good way to use up my stash. Or at least put a dent in it!

This is a quilt I designed and entered in JoAnn's quilt challenge a few years ago. It was not a winner by their standards but it sure got me out of my box.

This is Elly's baby quilt. It was machine pieced but I did hand quilt it for her. She was a premie so I did not have the quilt done in time for her arrival.

This was my art quilt phase. My sister suggested I make an art quilt and so I did. Her husband thinks it looks like a fancy car mat.

This is lamp I made. I covered styrofoam balls with fabric, small wooden spools with floss and covered the shade. It matches my dining room.

This quilt started out as my original Joann's challenge quilt. I did not like it, so I redid it as the quilt from the picture above. I doubled the amount of circles and added a border. Then I  shipped to my son and daughter in law. They love it!!

I made this quilt for a co worker's daughter. It is a memory/matching quilt. The backing is skull and cross bones with pink ribbons on their skulls.

If you have read all the way down to the end, I would like to reward you with a giveaway. The only problem is that there is no picture of it. I was going to the local quilt shop this week to pick out something special for this occasion. But it snowed and got very cold and I have not ventured out of my house since Monday expect for a quick trip to the grocery. So there will be a prize for the drawing on February 15th and I will post the picture as soon as I can get out. There is nothing you have to do to enter. You do not have to become a follower. You can answer the question "Machine quilting or hand quilting, which is your favorite?"

In stitches,
Judy

I love the look of hand quilting, but machine quilting is just so much quicker! And to me it's all about getting projects finished. Now I did just see machine quilting that looks like hand quilting, but the machine that does it is a bit out of my price range unfortunately! LOL Thanks for the giveaway! :0)

I would love to do hand quilting, but at my age I will never finish it. I started quilting late in life and really enjoy machine quilting.

I've only really done paper pieces quilting before and bits and bobs by hand so I guess I'd say that :)

Hi! I'm Angie and one of Vicki's GYB volunteers. It has been so much fun reading your post for this event. Loved the quilt show you gave us. I really like the quilt in your header. Gorgeous. I love the look of hand quilting, but have too many tops to do so, so I machine quilt. Thanks for the chance, Judy and thank you for participating in Grow your Blog 2014.

I do both...I machine quilt when I have a deadline or want it to be quick...I hand quilt when I want to just sit and enjoy the stitching...

I hand quilt. It does up a lot of time, but usually I have plenty of time to wait for them to get finished. My area has been hit hard by the storm too.

You have made some very pretty quilts.

Hello! I just found your blog via the Grow Your Blog Party. I think that your quilts are so nice, and I especially like the Confederate flag quilt (it made me smile, because I know someone that would love for me to make them a quilt like that). ;) To answer your question: machine quilting, but hand quilting is very beautiful!

Vicki said...

Judy, your work is beautiful. I'm here from GYB. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I love a surprise giveaway. Thanks for a chance to win!

I wouldn't trust my hand sewing to hold anything together, so machine quilting it is for me. I love doing it.

Thanks for sharing your pretty quilts - I'm a new follower. I'm a machine quilter - still learning. Thanks.

Hi Judy - I am SEW impressed with all your accomplishments - especially your good use of scraps. I'm not good at hand quilting or by machine! If I can't stitch in the ditch or cross hatch I send it out to be quilted.

It's nice to see a picture of you! I've only machine quilted so far, but I have a small project in my pile that I'm planning to hand quilt. I want to at least give it a try. You have some very pretty quilts - especially love Elly's baby quilt.

I am still working on the machine quilting issue I can handle a walking foot but so far anything that involves free motion is a train wreck. You have given me hope.

Hello - you are funny!!! Thanks for sharing you quilts and family with us. I would have voted YES on your Joan quilt!

Well my preference is hand quilting, both the look of and the doing. But then the arthritis kicked in, and I had to learn to machine quilt or have my quilts done professionally. I would prefer to spend the money on fabric, so I learnt to machine quilt, and basically don't do anything else now. Try joining in on the Rainbow Scrap Challenge as a way to dent your scrap stash. Its fun: http://superscrappy.blogspot.com.au/2014/01/scraphappy-saturday-blue-suede-shoes.html

At the moment...I am a hand quilter! I love scrappy quilts!! I would welcome a long arm quilting machine to help put a dent in all the quilt tops waiting to be quilted!! :) I am a happy new follower of your blog.

Hi Judy....nice to meet you...I've seen that brown quilt with the circles before...not sure where. But maybe in a WIP? Fellow quilter visiting from New Brunswick, Canada.

Hi Judy! Though I do very little quilting these days, and favour other creative pursuits, I just love to travel around the net and enjoy what other sewers are doing :) BTW I'm a machine gal through and through.

I'm hoping seeing all your colourful quilts will inspire me to finish the project that has been languishing in my sewing room (it was supposed to be an engagement gift for my son, but they'll be lucky to get it for the wedding LOL). I think partly it's because they chose a pattern from a magazine, and I much prefer to adapt and/or design my own patterns. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it :)

Brenda said...

I love scrappy quilts too! I do a little handquilting but face it I could never get them all quilted by hand so most are machine quilted. I've been learning to do a little on my sewing machine lately.

Sarah and Dan said...

Hand-quilting, only because I don't have a decent machine! Man, you have done a lot of projects!

Hello Judy, And I found you. Ok, You work at home, but for who or doing what. And what part of Ohio. I'm from Louisville KY. How close are you. And our weather is nasty too. But I think almost everyone's is right now. I think your work is great, and hope I can eventually make as many as you already have. I also still work so I understand the crunch of time. I am waiting anxiously to see your what your give away is. Curiosity is a flaw of mine. Enjoy the party. I'm still answering e-mails, haven't even had a chance to get to the list. So I'm writing everyone down I have already talked with. I'm sure there is a better way, but I don't know what it is. Hope to see you soon.

Hi Judy. Loved all your projects. I like to do hand quilting and usually do that on everything. However, this past year, I made a quilt for my grandsons and tried machine quilting for the first time. I kinda liked how they looked so I may be doing more of this on other projects. I have never tried free motion quilting though. It really imtimidates me.

Mokki said...

Your brown and green circles quilts are great! I really like them. I think hand quilting looks great but it would take so long to finish an entire quilt!

Wow you make those quilts with scraps! That is amazing. I love the bright colors you use and being in the south your confederate quilt drew me in. The lamb you created is awesome! So much creativity and the colors are lovely. It has been nice getting to know you.

Oh my, I can't really choose one or the other. Depends on the project. However, I generally only hand-quilt if I'm going to be able to see it. No point stitching in the ditch by hand! :-) Thanks for the giveaway. BTW, I'm a new follower too.

Hi Judy, it is wonderful to meet your here in blogland. Yeah, I love your goal of making 12 comfort quilts to donate to your guild. This really excites me since I'm the Community Service Chair for my local guild and I'm always cheering our gals and guy on to making quilts for our 19 agencies. Besides your goal, I love a great scrap quilt so you had me at your title :) Right now I'm a machine quilter. I rent a longarm machine at my LQS until I have enough room for my own. Thank you for the giveaway and stay warm, Toni from Easy Street Rambling (peddlerjo.blogspot.com)

I am WAY too lazy to hand quilt. I've never tried it but my hand-sewing is rather slow so I'm guessing it would take me forever to finish hand-quilting even a baby quilt. It would probably remain a UFO for a really long time.

Patty Antle said...

Hi Judy! I guess I am old fashioned and I like hand stitching. But I do not actively quilt so maybe machine stitching is wonderful too. Love your quilts. So nice to meet you!
